Restore Attention and Energy by Experiencing a Greenspace
Research shows that exposure to greenspace restores attention. Knowledge workers, for example, deplete attentional resources after hours of concentration. A brief exposure to greenspace stimulates a different type of mental perception, one that is sometimes called "bottom-up" attention. Experiencing natural forms (like green space) and sounds (like water flowing, birds) restores attentional capacity by providing what they call “soft fascination”, which engages “indirect attention”, allowing the brain centers that are responsible for “directed attention” (involved in reasoning or judgment) to rest. So, today's event is an activity that you can do. Schedule a break in your work. Use the time -- 5 minutes, 10 minutes -- to experience greenery. You can go for a walk near trees or plants. Even looking at a tree from your window is good.
